In 1938, Prof. Yan Shoumin, the founder of pediatrics, built up the first pediatric department and teaching & research office in northwest China, working with the lecturer Li Yuhua, teaching assistants He Bingwei and Sui Shitang. The office has been developing and expanding over these 80 years through sustained efforts, innovation of several generations. Now, the department has 3 inpatient areas with 110 beds available applied for clinical teaching, offering all kinds of specialized courses. There are 116 professional staff totally, among which 36 people are full-time teachers and 10 teachers are doctorate.

Teaching Tasks
The department offers several teaching programs including 5-year Program, 5+3 Integrated Program and Zonglian Experimental Class Program on Clinical Pediatrics, also offers postgraduate and PhD education, resident physicians training, further education for visiting physicians and incubation of general practitioners.
Achievements
The department has been committed to a dozen of educational reform projects launched by the university and the hospital, being awarded the second prize of teaching achievements by provincial authority and the first and the second prizes of teaching achievements by the university. In addition, over 30 papers around educational reform have been published and it involved into 7 textbooks compilation. Around 200 multimedia cases and 10 sets of typical cases courseware and 50G of videos, images and other data are collected by the department. The department has been named Advanced Teaching Collective by the hospital 6 year in a row since 2012. Some teachers win various prizes in the teaching competitions hosted by the university, such as 2007 Wang Kuancheng Yucai Award goes to professor Huang Shaoping, the third prize goes to associate professor Lijing in 2015 Online Video Teaching Competition, as well as professor Xiao Yanfeng and associate professor Zhou Jianping both win the first prize of the 2nd PBL Competition. The director Xiao Yanfeng has been voted as Excellent Teacher and Excellent Graduate Student Tutor for many times, being dubbed as Excellent Director of Professional Base by CMDA (Chinese Medical Doctor Association) in 2017. Besides that, associate professor Zhou Jianping won the first prize of the 2nd Teaching Competition of Medical Colleges in northwest region in 2018.
Highlights
The bilingual, multi-media teaching method is applied into the theoretical courses, meanwhile, the department stays focus on interaction in class, PBL study and flipped classroom. In 2016, the breakthrough was seen that the first MOOC on Children’s Growing Disease & Trophonosis was launched. The students are the center in practical courses with multidimensional medical records offered and often expose to real children patient. Thanks to constantly studying and developing new teaching forms and contents since 2016, the department has built up Double-base & Pluripotent Practical Teaching mode, winning the second prize of Teaching Achievements of Xi 'an Jiaotong University in 2017.
