The Department of Orthopedics II (Spine Surgery) is a national key clinical specialty and one of the first batch of key medical disciplines in Shaanxi Province. Prof. He Xijing, an outstanding expert approved by the Ministry of Health and a doctoral supervisor, and Professor Li Haopeng, the director of the Department, are well-known in the treatment of spinal diseases, especially cervical spondylosis, spinal cord injury and spinal deformity. The department has 2 professors, 8 associated professors and 13 doctors.It member has been the chief committee member 3 times and deputy committee members for more than 10 times at international, national and provincial level.

The strong points of the 2nd orthopaedics department lie in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal diseases and minimally invasive surgery of the spine and joints. Our department is specialized in complex and difficult diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders, among which the upper cervical spine deformity surgery and spinal deformity correction surgery are significantly advanced. We are also proficient in the treatment of spinal cord injury, spinal cord longitudinal fissure, tethered cord, scoliosis, kyphosis, cervical spondylosis, upper cervical deformity, craniocerebral junction malformation, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar degenerative scoliosis, lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal and intraspinal tumors. Transplantation of allogeneic olfactory ensheathing cells for the treatment of spinal cord injury has shown good results and brought good news to the rehabilitation of paraplegic patients.

We performed the first successful artificial anlanto-odontoid joint replacement in China, preserving the rotation function of the upper cervical vertebra, which greatly improved the patient’s life quality. Applying 3D printing technology, the trauma and risk of secondary posterior surgery are avoided by well-designed individualized cervical titanium plate, oral anterior molar joint reduction and fusion. These globally advanced technology received satisfactory effect and gained many international and domestic patents of invention. For the treatment of cervical disc herniation, the anterior cervical nucleus pulposus removal and bone grafting plate internal fixation operation, especially for patients with severe spinal cord compression in multiple segments, pre - and post – decompression has shown satisfactory result, which won the first prize of Shannxi Science and Technology Progress Award. Meanwhile, there are over 50 patients going through the correction surgery for the severe spinal deformity every year, which make it an absolutely a pilot in China.

Minimally invasive spinal surgery is one of the specialties in orthopedics. We carried out several groundbreaking operations in West China, including endoscopic surgery for spinal deformities and fractures, congenital scoliosis removal with half vertebra and internal fixation under endoscopy. Minimally invasive treatment of lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis and other lumbar degenerative diseases under intervertebral foramen also have good effect. Minimally invasive surgery for the spine and joints is the leading in China. The department is also experienced in surgical treatment of hemophilia complications.

The treatment level of gluteal muscle contracture is leading in the country, and patients with severe gluteal muscle contractures from all over the country came here and gained great therapeutic effect. It has been reported by many media, such as CCTV, and the concept of grading diagnosis was proposed for the first time in China, providing a reliable basis for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease and it works well in many serious cases treating.

In the field of scientific research and teaching, the department has won the first prize of Shaanxi Science and Technology Award twice and the second prize twice. More than 500 published academic papers, among which more than 120 were collected in SCI. As the chief editor and co-editor, this department participated in the compilation of more than 10 state-compiled textbooks and monographs. Its research group has over 10 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation, over 20 projects by provincial and municipal scientific research foundation, and it owns more than 20 national patents. Digital orthopedic technology and 3D printing technology grew matured in clinical practice, greatly improving the efficacy of complex surgery. We also undertakes the standardized training for resident doctors and cultivation of domestic and overseas students in five, seven and eight-year program of clinical medicine, which earned us Excellent Teaching Unit for many times.
