As one of the first Third-level grade-A hospitals in China, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, a large-scale modern general hospital integrating medical treatment, medical education, scientific research and preventive health care, is directly under the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education. The hospital can trace back to affiliated hospital of the first state-run medical school – Beijing Medical Institute, also known as Medical School of Peking University – founded by the Ministry of Education in 1912.In 1937, it was relocated and rebuilt in Shaanxi Province for the national interest during anti-Japanese war, over the past 84 years, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University has made remarkable contributions to the establishment and development of medical tertiary education and modern medical science in north-west China.
The hospital has staff of 3,264, including 38.4% of physician with PhD, over 450 experts with deputy senior or above professional titles, and over 50 experts granted Special Allowance from the State Council and Shaanxi Provincial government, besides, more than 200 experts of the post as chairman or vice chairman or standing committee member of national and provincial medical professional societies, as well as over 100 experts acting as chief editor, associate editor, or editors of medical science journals. 2 of them are candidates for New Century Talents Project, 10 are granted Youth Talent by Xi’an Jiaotong University, one of them is titled Leading Scholar by Xi 'an Jiaotong University, 2 are engaging in the 9th Hundred Talents Program, 9 engaging in New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Program launched by the Ministry of Education, 11 of them are voted Youth Science and Technology Star in Shaanxi Province, 4 of them are selected as national-level talent for Nominees Supporting Scheme.
The hospital has 2,268 ratified beds with 110,000 discharged patients and 2.2 million outpatients and emergency treatments annually. It consists of 6 inpatient wards, 53 clinical and medical science departments and research/experimental arms, editorial office and other departments. Urology surgery and dermatology departments are state key subjects of the Ministry of Education; 10 departments, such as Orthopedics, gastroenterology, clinical specific nursing, endemic diseases – endemic osteopathy, cardiomyopathy, iodine-related and thyroid diseases, and anesthesiology, dermatology, respiratory, otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery, emergency department and traditional Chinese medicine, are in the list of state key clinical departments. The biological therapy research center, a project co-launched by national and local authorities, is at the state-level; and the hospital has been approved as one of the first 4-A training bases of gynecological endoscopic surgery by the Ministry of Health, in addition, cardiovascular, obstetrics and neonatology departments have been engaging in the first group of incubation projects of key clinical departments of Shaanxi province. Orthopedic surgery, general surgery, respiratory medicine department, otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery and hematology are in the list of provincial key medical subjects, meanwhile, the departments of dermatology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, urinary surgery and anesthesiology have been in dominant position in the local, and TCM nephropathy department is recognized as one of key subjects locally. Nine departments, including dermatology, gastroenterology, otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery, medical ultrasound laboratory, pediatric surgery, emergency department, operating room, rehabilitation medicine and urology surgery, are part of the quality control center of diagnosis and treatment in Shaanxi province. There are provincial key laboratory for research on gastrointestinal motor and provincial key research center for biotherapy and translational medicine. These departments show distinguishing advantages in the relevant fields of research, diagnosis and treatment, including pediatric internal medicine, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, infectious department, ICU, rheumatology and immunology department and cadre healthcare, not only playing a major role but having an important academic place in the medical community of northwest China and Shaanxi province. Its medical technologies have been playing leading roles domestically and internationally, and its CAR-T cell therapy technology to treat multiple myeloma is taking international leading position, as well as, the hospital designed and created the first movable artificial cervical prosthesis and artificial atlas joint in the world which can make motor function restoration after vertebroplasty. Its accurate treatment for children with congenital pulmonary cystic diseases by thoracoscopy is proven to be more effective than the developed countries’. In china, the hospital possesses a number of state-of-the-art technologies and services including intrapartum surgery, continuous renal replacement therapy for neonatal renal failure (CRRT), Hisbundle pacing and multidisciplinary therapy and diagnosis (MTD),etc.
So far, there are 17 disciplines and one teaching and research office rolled out by the hospital for its clinical medicine education covering all disciplines of clinical medicine in doctor's degree and master's degree. It has launched 7 boutique courses with 776 full-time faculty and staff, 70 doctoral supervisors, 163 master supervisors, among them, 4 won the Prominent Teacher of Xi’an Jiaotong University Award, and a dozen of teachers won Wang Kuancheng Builder Award, Baogang Award, Advanced Individual of Three Aspects of Education and so on, besides, one has been elected member of the professional steering committee of clinical medicine of colleges and universities under Ministry of Education. The hospital plays multiple roles including National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Clinical Performance, National Standardized Training Base for Resident doctor, Demonstrative Joint Training Base for Postgraduate in Shaanxi Province and Advanced Collective of Ethics Construction of Shaanxi Province. It won 8 national and provincial awards of advanced teaching collective and 15 teaching achievement awards by the University and local authority; in the recent 4 years, over 40 educational reform projects at national, provincial and university-level have been approved to set up, meanwhile, over 130 staff won prizes in teaching competitions held by authorities. The hospital has engaged in compiling 59 planned textbooks (6 excellent ones included) of People's Medical Publishing House, where acting as the chief editor for 6 of them and the associate editor for 15 of them. In addition, the hospital has produced over 20 audio-visual teaching materials issued by People's Medical Publishing House, publishing more than 260 teaching papers.
The hospital is working on hundreds of research projects launched by all levels of authorities from the state to cities, being offered annually tens of millions Yuan of research grant by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the 973 Program, the National Key Scientific and Technological Research Project and the Key Development Funds of the National Health Commission. Every year, more than 600 academic papers are seen in medical journals, and SCI papers published by journals with high impact factors are in growth year by year. In the last decade, more than 40 high-level academic monographs have been authored or translated, being rewarded 60 awards of scientific and technological progress by the national and provincial authorities.
The Chinese Journal of Dermatovenereology, The Chinese Journal of Child Health and Dermatology, Abstracts of Chinese Medicine launched and run by the hospital, are national statistical source journals and important journals, which are collected by many well-known international databases from the USA, UK and Russia.
